An Updated Survey of Family Medicine Residencies and Pharmaceutical Industry Interactions

A collaboration between AMSA's PharmFree Campaign and Georgetown University Medical Center's PharmedOut

The Issue:

Interaction between academic medicine and the pharmaceutical and medical device industries has come under increased scrutiny over the past decade. While industry interaction can be beneficial for research and innovation, industry involvement in resident and student education and the rise of marketing in place of evidence-based education may have adverse effects on rational prescribing. Residency programs should assess the benefits and harms of these relationships and students applying for residencies may also consider the potential effect of industry interaction on their education when considering these programs.

Background:

Based on data from a national PharmFree/PharmedOut survey of family medicine residencies published in Academic Medicine, this four-question survey follows freshly minted physicians into their graduate medical education to determine what interactions the pharmaceutical industry has with residents.

The four questions asked of each residency program were:

  1. Does the residency allow gifts from industry or industry-supported food?
  2. Are drug samples accepted?
  3. Are industry representatives allowed access to medical students and/or residents at the family medicine center?
  4. Are any industry-sponsored residency activites allowed?

In the original survey most family medicine residency programs limited industry interaction, and more than a quarter (26.2%) of responding residency programs did not allow food, gifts, samples, or industry support of residency activities.

"Pharm-Free" Family Medicine Residency Programs Listing

The following table is an updated list of family medicine residency programs who answered "No" to all four survery questions - thus indicating they did not permit any industry food, gifts, samples, or support of residency activities.
